After months, if not years of playing & testing this
build, I've finally worked out 100% what the problems
are regarding VGA settings & resolutions on these early
gems...
This was made on a Windows 2000 system using VPC 2004 Sp1...
The logon password when asked during bootup is just the
letter z in lower case...
The installation files have been left on the drive in case
you feel game enough to want to fiddle with this & take it
further than I did....
This setup has been left running at 800x600 resolution, though
you can adjust it to run 1600x1200 without crashing, though
the color MUST be left at 256 colors as I cannot find an
appropriate Monitor driver that supports more than 256 colors
in this one,,, yet..!
ALL devices have drivers installed & working, the sound-card
was as hard to get working, as was the S3 VGA, sometimes it did,
& sometimes it wouldn't play sounds, & it never played MIDI
files, now it plays all, & works ALL the time....
The only program that stopped working is the command prompt,
which as I've found is because of the VGA driver, I have a
screenshot of which shows that to be the case, though I think
I can live without it considering how hard it was to even get
it this far, maybe I'll carry this further one day & find an
appropriate VGA driver that doesn't interfere with the working
of the command prompt within windows...
Windows shuts down on it's own when choosing to shutdown from
the shutdown menu, no need to Ctrl/Alt/Del, it shuts down just
as if it were running on a system with an atx power supply...
